Mallorca’s Museums and Art Galleries

Published in What’s on

If you’re a fan of history, you will be in paradise on Mallorca.

The island has been conquered several times, with proof of inhabitants back to prehistoric times. The Romans have ruled the island, there is what is known as the Moorish period when the island was occupied by Muslims from North Africa, and then came the Christians. Mallorca has been fought over many times, even continuing into the 20th century with the Republicans and Nationalists doing battle.

The uniting of two smaller nations to form Espana in 1749 brought it under the rule of Spain, and the only attempts to take the island since have been financial ones when other countries have offered to purchase the island.

Mallorca’s history is well documented and there are many museums, large and smaller local ones, where you can see artefacts from all eras of rule. You will also find amazing art collections that include the work of many famous artists.

Museu Diocesa, Palma

The small museum is packed with religious and historical artefacts. It is based in a wing of the former home of the Bishop of Palma, just behind the Cathedral. The collections span five centuries and include paintings, prayer books, ceramics and Arab tapestries among other things. It opens every day except Sundays, 10.00 till 2.00, and there is a small entrance fee.

It houses a very interesting collection of religious art and is just one of the museums in the area. Alcudia has many Roman connections with parts of the Roman buildings still standing.
