Petra Holiday Villas and Apartments for rent. Luxury self catering properties specially selected for you
Situated just under 30 miles from Palma, the small agricultural town of Petra is a welcoming place to enjoy a family holiday in Mallorca.
The convenient central location enables you to visit nearby tourist areas and attractions, while the town itself remains quiet and unspoilt by heavy tourist activity. Balearic Villas has a number of well-appointed holiday villas in Petra, all of which come with mod-cons and conveniences to provide you with a comfortable stay. If you’re longing for a family holiday in an authentic, friendly part of Mallorca, away from the busy built up tourist areas, Petra is the perfect place.
Petra, home to Junipero Serra
The town has it’s roots in agriculture, but is best known for being the birthplace of Father Junipero Serra.
Serra is a veritable hero to the local population, and as such, he is at the source of a great deal of the tourist-related activity in the town. Serra was a Franciscan friar, famous for travelling to California to found a number of Christian missionaries. He worked as a missionary in Mexico from 1749 to 1763 before heading to California, and is oft-heralded as one of the most famous people of note to emerge from the island. So strong is the presence of this religious icon in Petra, there is a museum dedicated to his life (Junipero Serra Museum), a centre of study (Study Center Juniperianos), tours of his childhood home as well as a monument dedicated to him. There are also a number of churches to explore, including the Church of Santuari de Bonanya, and the Parish church of Esglesia de Sant Pere, which dates back to the 13th century.
Besides the religious history of the town, there is plenty more to discover during a family holiday in Petra. There are a number of vineyards nearby, including the 100-year old Bodega Miquel Oliver. When you’re not busy exploring the town, you can partake in planned excursions out to hiking trails, vineyards and to the nearby town of Manacor or the beach at Cala Millor. The town itself is well-equipped with shops and restaurants, but not as well serviced by public transit links as other parts of the island, therefore a hire car is advised.
